Find out more about Bornholm's biogas potential<\/h1>\n

Helene Urth, Head of Internationalisation & Partnerships at Energy Cluster Denmark, shares the latest news here on the biogas track in the Bornholm Energy Island project<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

When can we expect something to really start happening?<\/em><\/p>\n

With a project as large as Energy Island Bornholm, it always takes some time to get the whole machinery going. When, together with several companies and a wide range of actors including Business Center Bornholm, we wrote the application to establish the \u2019Centre for Green Energy on Bornholm\u2019 last autumn, it was with the expectation that the innovation tracks would be based on the tenders that will emerge in connection with the establishment of the energy island, but as these tenders are delayed - the timeline from the Danish Energy Agency is now that we can expect the tenders to be published in a year's time or early in 2024.<\/p>\n

So therefore we have approached the task in a slightly different way. At Energy Cluster Denmark, we always work with innovation based on a \u201dproblem owner\u201d, meaning an actor who faces a real problem where there is a need for innovation in one way or another to find a solution. The approach therefore became instead that we, together with BCB, went out to both industry and agriculture to talk to them about what issues they were facing. Here we met Bigadan, who told us about a huge potential for increasing biogas production and use on Bornholm, but also that they faced a number of challenges and considerations before they would step into scaling up. This led us to pursue \u201dThe biogas potential on Bornholm\u201d as the subject for the first innovation track.<\/p>\n

So what is the status of the project right now?<\/em><\/p>\n

The project has started to make good progress with its activities. We are at a point where we have one innovation track on biogas, which is well under way; we are considering another innovation track on PtX and surplus heat, which we are in the process of planning, and finally we are considering an innovation track on digitalisation. Here, we have yet to commit to a specific topic. The fact that the cogs have started turning also means that there are many balls in the air at once.<\/p>\n

What demands does that place on the people of Bornholm?<\/em><\/p>\n

This places demands on the project partners, but especially also on the people of Bornholm \u2013 here we are talking about both industry, agriculture and citizens. In connection with Energy Island Bornholm, many things must be decided at once, and we can certainly feel that this results in many of our potential participants being pulled in several directions. Fortunately, there has been, and continues to be, great interest in the biogas track, and many see a potential for creating an independent project where we might get the opportunity to demonstrate various new technological solutions in the application of biogas. We naturally hope that the great commitment we have encountered will continue as we introduce new innovation tracks.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Five benefits of the biogas track according to Helene Urth:<\/h2>\n

1) CO2 reductions in several industries, including agriculture, which is a major emitter and of great importance to Bornholm.<\/p>\n

2) Degassed biomass has a higher fertilising value than the slurry farmers delivered to the biogas plant.<\/p>\n

3) the potential for using biogas in arts and crafts (ceramics and glass) will mean CO2 savings by switching from fossil gas and allowing a marketing angle of \u201dgreen art\u201d.<\/p>\n

4) Biogas can be used in transport and replace diesel.<\/p>\n

5) there is the possibility that the biogas can be upgraded to biomethane, which can be used in the existing infrastructure instead of non-renewable energy options (the list is not exhaustive).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Next step?<\/em><\/p>\n

Regarding the activities of the innovation tracks, we are currently planning the format for the next workshop in the biogas innovation track. We have involved students from Aalborg University to carry out investigations regarding the various opportunities within biogas, which concretely means that around 25 students will be coming to the island here at the end of November. Their investigations will be based on various local cases where there is an opportunity to contribute to or utilise the biogas. Whether the other innovation tracks will follow the same workshop format has not been decided yet. We are currently looking into whether there are other approaches that make more sense for the individual track.<\/p>\n

That said, we plan each innovation track with a focus on either coming up with concrete solutions to the challenge or being left with a list of project ideas and partners that can be taken forward into their own independent project, for which funding can be applied for nationally or internationally.<\/p>\n

And the perspective in the biogas track?<\/em><\/p>\n

The innovation track provides new perspectives on the potential applications for biogas. Since 2014, it has been permitted to upgrade biogas and feed it out to consumers via the natural gas grid, which happens in many places in Denmark. However, there is no natural gas grid on Bornholm, so that is not an option \u2013 right now! Another possibility is to increase the production of district heating and electricity, as is already the case today, where the biogas is converted into hot water which is sent back to consumers via the district heating network. If the production of biogas on Bornholm is doubled or tripled, however, more district heating will be produced than the citizens in Aakirkeby can use, and it will then be necessary to build new district heating infrastructure, given that the district heating in the area around Aakirkeby is not connected to other urban areas on Bornholm. Regarding increased electricity production, it must be expected that there will be even more pressure on the electricity grid in<\/p>\n

the future, as a result of the production of renewable energy from the Energy Island project, means conversion to district heating and electricity might not be the most obvious use of the biogas on Bornholm.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Benefits of the PtX innovation track<\/h2>\n

to reuse the surplus heat rather than letting it escape into thin air<\/p>\n

2) savings in agriculture on feed.<\/p>\n

3) the possibility of growing new crops, e.g. tomatoes and perhaps even protein-rich insects as animal feed or human food.<\/p>\n

4) the potential for creating new, exciting businesses and much more besides. Whether these potential benefits are realistic on Bornholm is something we will examine more closely in the innovation track on PtX and surplus heat.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

So what?<\/em><\/p>\n

As part of the biogas initiative, we have been working with Bigadan, which operates the biogas plant in Aakirkeby. They have been exploring other potential applications, as biogas can be used for various purposes and there is interest in using raw biogas for PtX and methanol production. The most obvious applications are either to compress the gas and use it as fuel for, for example, lorries for distribution runs (shorter distances, fixed routes and therefore less need for frequent refuelling points) or to liquefy the gas by cooling it and transport it by lorry for industrial use on Bornholm. Companies that currently use fossil gas and convert it to liquefied gas will be able to reduce CO\u2082 emissions by up to 200%. Both options will require significant investment on Bigadan\u2019s part, which is why we felt it was relevant to examine this in more detail \u2013 partly to assess the current and future demand for gas on Bornholm, in light of<\/p>\n

the increased electrification \u2013 and partly about the companies that currently use larger quantities of gas, some of which are located in close proximity to each other, will be able to convert their production so that they can use the gas from Bigadan rather than traditional bottled gas. Finally, it will also be relevant to examine how we ensure security of supply as well as safe and environmentally friendly transport of the gas out to the companies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Will it help a few companies or broadly?<\/em><\/p>\n

Through the first workshop, we found out that there might be a need to look at the bigger picture rather than at an individual level, as there is an enormous potential to incorporate more circularity in the biogas production and utilisation. Agriculture, the biogas plant, industrial enterprises and craft businesses all have the potential to be part of a circular system where the biogas is utilised on Bornholm, while at the same time avoiding having to \u201dimport\u201d gas by lorry or ship. Therefore, we are continuing to work on mapping the various opportunities and challenges.<\/p>\n

How will the project as a whole benefit Bornholm?<\/em><\/p>\n

Something we have kept in mind is that the project must be driven by Bornholm's needs and desires. Therefore, we prioritised from the start initiating a dialogue with local stakeholders with a strong focus on how important it is that the innovation is driven by the locals.<\/p>\n

The approach to the innovation tracks has therefore been to ask the local business community on Bornholm what challenges and innovation needs they were facing.
