We need to keep the wheels turning with international labour<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>

Head of Labour Market Allan Westh emphasises that foreign labour is crucial for Bornholm's continued growth and for securing workforce for the island's businesses in the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Bornholm's business community is booming. This means an increased need for manpower at workplaces on the island. With a population that is getting older and older, it is therefore extra necessary that we succeed in attracting foreign labour.<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0The shortage of hands in business is not only a challenge in the rest of the country, but also on Bornholm. In 2024 alone, 2,375 of the island's employees were foreign nationals, compared to just 1,025 ten years ago. If we compare this to a current workforce of around 18,500, it goes without saying that it would be difficult for Bornholm's business community to manage without foreign labour, explains Head of Job Centre Allan Westh, who also sees a positive side to the current labour market situation.<\/p>\n

\u2013 When we lack labour on the island, it is because things are really moving. In most sectors on Bornholm, things are going really well. This also means that unemployment on the island is down to 1.7 per cent, which is significantly below the national average, just as the figure is below the expected unemployment rate that Bornholm was supposed to have.<\/p>\n

The low unemployment is therefore partly due to a high level of activity in Bornholm's business sector, but it is also due to demographics, points out Allan Westh.<\/p>\n

\u2013 There is an imbalanced population composition on the island, where the age groups leaving the labour market number around 650, while those entering now number 450, so already there is a challenge. The background is thus partly positive, but is also connected to demographics.<\/p>\n

According to the head of labour market affairs, that development is set to continue.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The situation isn't that there has been a marked change in the number of newcomers, or that children are pouring in who can help change the population composition. Even though many newcomers are families with children, it is by no means enough to offset the demographic imbalance, he says, adding:<\/p>\n

\u2013 We are therefore quite dependent on newcomers, both from the rest of Denmark, but especially also from abroad. For a great many municipalities are in the same situation as Bornholm. Therefore, foreign labour is incredibly important, he states.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

If you are coming to work for just three to four months, you don't have the opportunity to find accommodation yourself, and therefore it is crucial that the companies step up themselves. When it comes to permanent jobs, it is likewise important that there are homes to be found on the island that are attractive enough that you want to live there with a family. Therefore, housing development is absolutely central in this regard.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Businesses provide housing<\/h5>\n

When you want to attract labour to the island, it is important that both businesses and the municipality think holistically, he believes.<\/p>\n

\u2013 If you move here as a family, for example, it is important that there are jobs for both partners in the family. If, on the other hand, it is a matter of a seasonal workplace, then you are barely as dependent on that; it is more about the practical conditions, how you can secure them a place to live that is both cheap and close to the workplace. And if it is short-term labour, it is to a large extent the businesses themselves that must consider how they can support the availability of housing, he says.<\/p>\n

Many already do so. This applies, for example, to the restaurant group in Svaneke, which has its own housing available, while others have teamed up across businesses if they are not large enough individually to acquire their own housing options. Housing is generally completely crucial when it comes to attracting foreign labour, he believes.<\/p>\n

When it is a matter of permanent jobs, it is likewise important that there are homes to be found on the island that are sufficiently attractive to make you want to live there with a family. Therefore, housing development is completely central in relation to this, says Allan Westh, who is pleased that quite a few homes are on the way within the next few years, and where the municipality will prioritise housing\/job schemes in connection with the construction of social housing. This means that newcomers with jobs can be given preferential access to rental housing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Creating networks for newcomers<\/h5>\n

However, when it comes to attracting international labour, there are also areas where the municipality and the newcomer service make a difference, Allan Westh explains.<\/p>\n

At Tilflytterservice, active efforts are made to attract people to the island and inform them about the opportunities available here, just as Citizen Service is ready to guide newcomers on all practical matters, such as registering with the tax authorities or enrolling one's children in school and daycare.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

And the municipality is also making a targeted effort, states the head of job services.<\/p>\n

\u2013 By inviting external employees to events where they have the opportunity to meet across departments, we are trying to support networking among newcomers, and we have already held several welcome events for everyone moving to Bornholm, says Allan Westh, who also sees an increased political focus on accommodating outside labour.<\/p>\n

\u2013 In the previous electoral term, we had a refugee council. In this electoral term, we have had a council for international Bornholmers, and that is precisely to embrace the fact that more foreigners are choosing to settle on the island and give them an opportunity to enter into dialogue with the politicians on Bornholm, so that they can report on the opportunities and challenges they encounter.<\/p>\n

According to the head of labour market affairs, virtually all industries on Bornholm use foreign labour.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Where the need for labour a few years ago was primarily within the more unskilled areas, we see today to a much greater extent that it is also within skilled and especially academic areas of work, as is already the case within public health, where a part of the healthcare staff \u2013 both doctors and nurses \u2013 have a foreign background.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Recommendations from newcomers sell best<\/h5>\n

However, there is still potential to attract even more foreign labour to the island.<\/p>\n

\u2013 We need to be even more proactive in the EU network we are part of, and be present and visible when events are held under that umbrella, he says, and continues:<\/p>\n

\u2013 In addition, it is also about building on what has been the driving force in particular until now \u2013 namely when newcomers share positive stories about their lives on Bornholm with their networks.<\/p>\n

We have tried to make a bit of use of that by supporting the international newcomers in meeting across boundaries, in order to also get them to promote Bornholm to the countries or areas they come from, says Allan Westh, who also assesses that the positive increase in outside labour is precisely due to foreign employees recommending the island to their acquaintances.<\/p>\n

The task for the Newcomer Service and the municipality now and in the future lies in systemising the effort and continuously evaluating whether we can become even better at reaching out. For knowing someone from Germany on Bornholm is one thing. Moving an entire family to a foreign island in the Baltic Sea and having to establish oneself anew is quite another. Here, for example, there is a need to get in touch with our Newcomer Service to make the pieces fall into place and get off to a good start with life on Bornholm.<\/p>\n

What does the future of the labour market look like in 10 years?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2013 What is relatively certain is the demographic picture, which means that if we are to maintain the same type of labour market that we have today, it requires us to have succeeded in attracting even more people from outside. Because otherwise we are going to face \u2013 if not stagnation \u2013 then at least some industries scaling back or opting out of Bornholm. Therefore, it is crucial for Bornholm's further development that in ten years' time we can look back and say that we actually succeeded in continuing this development regarding foreign labour, says Allan Westh, who is, after all, optimistic about the future of Bornholm's labour market.<\/p>\n

\u2013 I think it has gone well until now. When we look at the development over the last 10 years, it has gone reasonably well, and when we look in particular at the last two to three years, the development has shown that we have also increasingly succeeded in attracting skilled workers and graduates to the island.<\/p>\n

\u2013 But it also requires that we as a society embrace it, and I hope that in ten years we will also have a state school system that can offer teaching in English, because I believe that will be absolutely crucial if we are to maintain the international workforce that we need, says the head of labour market affairs.<\/p>\n
