Come along to Femern: Businesses on Bornholm can draw inspiration from Energiø Bornholm

Press release, 15 April 2026

How can local businesses capitalise on the opportunities presented by one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects? This is the question that an upcoming excursion from Bornholm to Fehmarn will focus on, as local businesses are invited to join an inspirational trip.

The excursion, which is organised by Business Center Bornholm, is aimed at Bornholm-based companies that want to learn more about how a major construction project creates opportunities not only for traditional contractors and craft businesses, but also for a wide range of other industries.

At Fehmarn, development has shown that major projects create activity far more broadly than one might immediately imagine. This applies, among other things, to services, retail, logistics, transport, accommodation, catering, leisure, personal services, repair, health, training and a range of other areas that support the many people working in and around the project.

”We want to inspire local businesses to think broadly and see the opportunities in what comes with large-scale community projects. It is not just about major construction contracts and traditional deliveries, but also all the daily needs that arise when many people work and stay in an area over a longer period, says senior business consultant Jørn Pedersen, who is the guide on the tour.

Wants to take some inspiration back home to the island

The excursion aims to give participants insight into how companies and local actors in the Fehmarnbelt area have worked to translate a major construction project into local growth, new partnerships and new customer groups. At the same time, participants will gain concrete experiences, examples and solutions that may also be relevant in a Bornholm context.

”The aim is to give Bornholm businesses new inspiration on how they can position themselves in relation to the opportunities that may arise around Energy Island Bornholm – both when it comes to new products, partnerships and access to value chains, but also in relation to understanding the needs that arise when a major project attracts many stakeholders, says Christa Lodahl, Head of Business at Business Center Bornholm.

We need to think broadly

The excursion is therefore not only aimed at businesses that already see themselves as suppliers to large projects, but also at businesses that may not immediately have thought that such projects are relevant to them.

”We hope that the trip gives participants the broader perspective. A large workplace or a temporary ’city’ of employees creates demand for much more than building materials and machinery. A need also arises for food, shopping, transport, accommodation, cafés, leisure activities, personal service and a wide range of everyday solutions. That is the understanding we would like the companies to take home with them,” Christa Lodahl elaborates.
