Following several years of uncertainty, the signature that the business community on Bornholm has long awaited has now been put in place. Denmark and Germany have concluded the final agreement on Energy Island Bornholm, and thus the world's first energy island is now moving from vision to reality.
Energy Island Bornholm will become a central hub in Europe's green transition. For Bornholm's business community, this means new opportunities for contracts, partnerships and long-term business development – but also a clear signal that the time to get ready is now.
Optimism in the business sector
Business Center Bornholm's Head of Business, Christa Lodahl, is experiencing great enthusiasm among local businesses:
“The Bornholm businesses view the energy island with optimism and the new business opportunities it creates in the form of new orders, partnerships and supplies. Many are already ready to be hooked up to the project, while others are in the process of preparing. But there are still companies that could benefit from learning more about where the opportunities are relevant specifically to them. Here we are ready to help – but it is now, for the time has come.”
Energy Island Bornholm will create activity across a wide range of industries over the coming years – from construction, civil engineering and offshore to service, logistics, retail, accommodation and food. The project spans decades, and for many companies, this could be a task extending 25–30 years into the future.
Now is the time for businesses to position themselves
Although the energy island itself is not expected to be operational until the 2030s, work is beginning much earlier. Already this year and in the coming years, the first tenders and tasks are expected to come into play – both locally on Bornholm and in the Zealand parts of the project.
Therefore, it is crucial that companies do not wait for the tenders to land on the table.
“It's about understanding the project timeline, knowing your role in the value chain and making yourself visible to the upcoming main contractors. At the same time, it's crucial to be ready to enter into collaborations – often as a subcontractor – when the tasks are to be solved,” says Christa Lodahl.
“The companies that enter the process early are in the strongest position when the tasks are distributed.”
